OGFL contributions to listing Longfin Smelt

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has officially listed the San Francisco Bay-Delta distinct population segment of longfin smelt (Spirinchus thaleichthys) as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This decision, effective as of August 29, 2024, aims to address the significant decline of this species, which has seen populations decrease by over 99% since the 1980s. With this federal listing, the longfin smelt joins five other native fish species in the Bay, including Delta Smelt now protected under the ESA.

The OGFL has contributed scientific information that was instrumental to the listing and is conducting research to identify conservation measures to protect the species from further decline.
